Unless A Corn of Wheat...

"On the day of Jewish festivals, the Passover, some Greeks approached and asked Phillip, a disciple of Jesus, to see Jesus. So Phillip told Andrew of their request and they went and told Jesus about these Greeks. Then Jesus answered them;

The hour has come for the Son of man to be glorified.

Very truly I tell you,

Unless a corn of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain;

But if it dies
it bears
  much fruit !

Caesar or Christ?

Besides maintaining stability through taxation and military threat, the Roman Empire also established an imperial religion.  The name Augustus was one that was given to him by the Senate of Rome.  Prior to this he had been called Octavius.  Augustus literally means “worthy of worship.”  And indeed he became the object of worship throughout the Empire.  One scholar named Ethelbert Stauffer states:  In the framework of ancient liturgy he was invoked like one of the ancient national gods of Rome…and he was surrounded with such an abundance of religious honour that many people thought there was nothing left for the worship of the heavenly gods (Tacitus).

Not only had he been declared “worthy of worship” but his father Julius was divinized after he died and this gave Augustus grounds for claiming the title: “son of god.”  There is an inscription that was written around 9 BC  that gives us some insight to the way in which he was being hailed as more than a man:

The most divine Caesar…we should consider equal to the Beginning of all things…; for when everything was falling [into disorder] and tending toward dissolution, he restored it once more and gave to the whole world a new aura; Caesar…the common good Fortune of all…the beginning of life and vitality….All the cities unanimously adopt the birthday of the divine Caesar as the new beginning of the year….Whereas Providence, which has regulated our whole existence…has brought our life to the climax of perfection in giving to us [the emperor] Augustus, whom it [Providence] filled with strength for the welfare of men, and who being sent to us and our descendants as Savior, has put an end to war and has set all things in order; and [whereas,] having become [god] manifest (phaneis), Caesar has fulfilled all the hopes of earlier times …in surpassing all the benefactors who preceded him…, and whereas, finally, the birthday of the god [Augustus] has been for the whole world the beginning of good news (euangelion) concerning him [therefore let a new era begin from his birth]. (OGIS 2.#458)

THY KINGDOM COME

“And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.”

And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
One cannot listen to the words of Jesus and NOT realize the political implications of the gospel of the Kingdom –the  KING’s domain.  The term KINGDOM is pregnant with governmental imagery - monarchy - theocracy.  It implies that there must be a king - sovereign ruler over the affairs of men.

Before His crucifixion Jesus was asked, "Are you a King?", to which He responded, "Thou sayest!"  Above his head, on the cross, there was placed a sign by he Romans that said, "The King of the Jews."  Jesus spent much time publicly speaking about the kingdom, where it was, how it worked, He even taught His disciples to pray, "Thy kingdom, they will be done on earth as it is in Heaven."  Jesus’ reign was to come into this time/space world of ours and his kingship - his government, his rule was seen as an obvious threat, not only to the Romans but also to those Zionists who longed for a return to an earthly Jewish state and their nationalistic identity  (as reflected in the attitude of His disciples at the end of His 40 day, post-resurrection seminar on the subject when they inquired, “Lord are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”)
8 Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid; 9 and he entered into the Praetorium again and *said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer. 10 So Pilate *said to Him, “You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?” 11 Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me to you has the greater sin.” 12As a result of this Pilate made efforts to release Him, but the Jews cried out saying,

“If you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar.”

Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. 14 Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he *said to the Jews, “Behold, your King!” 15 So the chief priests answered, “Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!” Pilate *said to them, “Shall I crucify your King?” The chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar.”

Jesus’ kingdom is political and has worldwide political implications.  To relegate it to some other ethereal realm or some future age is to deny the prayer and teachings of Jesus.  The problem for most of us is that we do not prayerfully consider the teachings of Jesus or their impact upon ourselves, our world, our society, our ethics, our morals, our nation and our politics!
Although it is a mind boggling concept, I like the idea of the WWJD test (What Would Jesus Do). We must consider, as representatives of the King, how would He have us respond to human suffering , oppression, racism, injustice, poverty, militarism, child abuse, pornography and the flood of filth burying this nation? Or, as in Bonheoffer’s case, how do we as ambassadors for Christ respond to genocide, murder, and tyranny? Are we called to just sit back and think noble heavenly thoughts?  Do we simply retire to our closets and pray for divine intervention?  One important question is, “Are we justified in feigning obedience to the governments of men under the guise of "rendering unto Caesar'?”  Are we justified, as God’s ambassadors  in remaining passive and powerless in the face worldwide war, violence, suffering, injustice, exploitation, pestilence, famine, genocide and American militarism?
It is my contention that if there are no "political" consequences to the kingdom of God coming to earth (as it already is in heaven), then HIS will is NOT being done on earth.  A clash of kingdoms is inevitable. The kingdom of God often stands diametrically opposed to the plans, purposes, means, methods and ends of the kingdoms of this world.  One cannot pledge allegiance to both Caesar and Christ. Our purpose as agents of a foreign power is more than a license sell fire insurance and preach the peace and prosperity American “apple pie in the sky when we die by and by” gospel!  Our avoidance of the clash between civilizations, values, and kingdoms has resulted in what Tony Campollo calls “low impact Christianity.”
Christianity is by nature counter cultural! Jesus Christ was a radical.  He neither sanctioned Roman Justice nor the democratic expression of the Greek ecclesia.  No one hearing him could ignore the inplications of the primacy of the Kingdom of God, which Jesus espoused with such authority.  If we are indeed subjects of the King of Kings,  we must ask Him, “Lord, our Commander and Chief, what would you have me do in the face of such evil?  How shall I respond?  What is your will to be done?”
I am convinced that we are not called to be passive or cowards but more than conquerors through Christ.  In these dark times let us not pray for ease, peace, prosperity, blessings or comfort but let us ask God for what is needed - courage!  Courage to march to the beat of a different drum!  Courage to stand and declare the will of God and to live out kingdom values in the midst of a self absorbed narcissistic culture.
The question for us to consider is not IF Jesus is ruling over His kingdom but how, when and where does He demonstrate His rule or dominion.  The BIG unasked question is often,  HOW  - by what means - in what way - should we as ambassadors for Christ respond to his call to BE His disciples in the midst of a fallen world.  How do we demonstrate the primacy of faith and the love of God to such a fallen world?  How do we oppose evil without ourselves utilizing tactics, which make us like that which we hate?   Lord what would you have us do?
As illogical as it may sound, we must accept that Christianity is not ultimately about outcomes or even the transformation of society. The goal is not utopia or heaven on earth but a heavenly people on the earth.  It is not about WHAT we do or achieve but HOW we do!   It is about demonstrating the ultimacy of the power of sacrificial love.  Hence, good ends achieved by other than love are of dubious eternal consequence.  Love is the pure hi-test gas which powers the engine of the kingdom advance and which leaves behind no trail of pollution.

We need to understand what the "Kingdom of God" is all about and what it means for us to be "citizens of heaven" and where our allegiance truly is!  When there is conflict between the teachings of Christ (assuming we really are interested and diligent in trying to understand what our Lord wants us to do) AND what is our actual practice, then what do we do?  As with Bonheoffer, or Dr. King, Patrick Henry, and countless others around the world, we must be moved to stand against the tide - even if it costs us our liberty, our comforts and/or our lives.  Whether the issue  is abortion, caring for the poor and destitute, ending slavery, or justice for the oppressed, the only appropriate question for us to ask is, “Lord what would you have us DO!?!”

This doing or acting is not obligatory but a reasonable expression of our submission to His Lordship.  It is a manifestation - a visible evidence - of the love which operates within us.  This heavenly love compels us to act.  Simply saying we have faith or that we are “believers” is not sufficient. The devils believe and tremble.  So you're a believer?  So what!  Faith without works is dead; meaning that mere “belief” is impotent - it is neither life giving nor life enhancing!  We are to show our trust in the Lord, to demonstrate our submission to Him and His reign with and by our acts of obedience.  Jesus says, “If you love me you will do what I say!” Really?! Can it possibly be that simple?

We American self-styled believers are, for the most part, impotent because we do not practice what we preach or at least what we profess to believe.  We are all so smug secure and comfortable in our religious kingdoms and our little theological houses that require so little of us.  The point we must understand is, as Morpheus says to Neo in The Matrix, “There’s a difference between knowing the path and walking the path!”

We have opted out and chosen to delegate to a secular self-serving worldly American governmental system such responsibilities as caring for the poor, the widow and the orphan.  In abdicating our God given opportunities for loving service, we have made the government of God subservient to or beneath and subject to the governments of men.  Despite the saying on our money, We do NOT trust in God, we trust in the money and most of all we trust in ISMS - whether it is Capitalism, Americanism, Liberalism, Socialism, Conservatism, Libertarianism, Communism, Fascism, Evangelicalism, Protestantism, Catholicism or any other of a host of institutionalisms!  I once heard a brother comment that:  If the people of God would get right with God and live out their faith by the love of God, all them isms would be wasms!”

In saying these things I find myself deeply convicted.  I too talk a good talk, but if I were struck deaf, mute and without even a voice in cyberspace, I wonder if anyone would recognize that I am a follower of Jesus and that I am subject to a higher government – a higher calling – and a higher power by simply observing how I conduct my life!  After all, Jesus did NOT say “By their rhetoric, or their labels,  their theology, their blogs or their public policy pronouncements ye shall know they are my disciples!”

Most of the time I’m afraid my big mouth speaks much louder than my life.  Lord have mercy!

So here is my prayer for me and for us.  "Oh God, bring gripping conviction on our hearts and cause us to throw ourselves at your feet in absolute surrender. Come and reign over and in us for we know there is no hope in following or in allegiance to Caesar.”

Stormy Monday

Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth. But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy. And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm. And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commands even the winds and water, and they obey him.
And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.

Being an old blues man I find myself hearing this song:
Stormy Monday

'Well they call it Stormy Monday
Tuesday's just as bad.
Wednesday's worse
And Thursday's oh so sad...'

No matter how calm and serene life may be you just never know when a storm may arise.  Thinking about this I am reminded of my first sailing adventure. I was invited by my boss to accompany him on his yacht.  We sailed out of Grosse Pointe Yacht Club which is located on Lake St. Clair, just North of Detroit.  It was a beautiful calm and sunny day - a great day for an excursion.  Unfortunately for me, it was an excursion turned adventure!

My first discovery was that there is a great difference between a 'boat' and a yacht. Other than piloting a 16' aluminum boat with a 35HP Evenrude, I knew absolutely nothing about sailing or yachting. However,  being on a yacht felt much safer to me.  We got off to a great start and it appeared that it was going to be a stellar day. I was also delighted to learn that we were going to do some fishing -  in style, of course.

One of the many things I did not know, is that Lake St. Clair (like Lake Erie) is extremely shallow and  is known for its sudden violent storms.  Yep, you got it!  I learned first hand that day that no matter what the forecast, no matter how calm, you can suddenly find yourself overwhelmed and in peril from a violent storm.  The  storm which whipped up lake St. Clair that day, was frightening indeed!  Even my boss, who was an experienced captain, was overwhelmed and found himself at the mercy of the wind and waves.  Though we tried to run ahead of the storm we were soon overtaken and it seemed for a time that we might not make it back to the harbor.  It was a 'prayer' moment!

Reading about this excursion on the sea of Galilee I find myself  identifying with those frightened disciples in the boat with Jesus., "Help us Lord we perish!"

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.....

My wife will tell you that I, like Jesus, can sleep through anything - especially church and of course movies (chick flicks).  I have always joked that if power napping ever became an Olympic sport I would be a shoe in for a gold medal!

Recently as I read this passage, a light went on and I  received a quiet but awesome revelation concerning "power napping". As I meditated on this passage, somewhere in recesses of my spirit I heard these words:

"Only when you can rest in midst of the storms of life
Can you then arise in the Spirits power and rebuke them!"

The thought which followed was:

"In Christ, power and authority only come from a position of rest!"

Wow!  No more frantic activity.  We rest in His finished work and total victory upon the cross, so that;  'Now there remains unto the people of God a Shabat - a Sabbath rest!'

The challenge remains for me to cease striving and learn to lay back and to rest in Him!  My new mantra has become;

 "Let go and let God."

It seems I waste an awful lot of energy & time trying to do or accomplish what He has already done!

How about you?

THE HARNESS OF THE LORD: by Bill Britton - 1918-1985

I remember receiving this word through brother Tom Bailey many MANY years ago while attending a house meeting in Crozet, Virginia. At that time the word came to me that I was a young rebellious colt as pictured in this vision. Indeed it has since proven to be a genuine word from the Lord. Yet, in God's providence and grace, He lassoed me with cords of love as I ran "free" and He led me into His corral to be trained. On reflection I am aware that our Lord used neither the whip nor spurs to "break" my rebellious spirit and to bring me into submission to his gentle and loving hand. He is indeed the divine horse whisperer. Realizing my brokenness I finally yielded to Him and I acknowledged my need to be purchased - added to His stable and be trained and groomed by the master's hand. That training and grooming still continues today. I am no longer my own but I've been bought with a price.

I believe, as with many truly God breathed utterances, this message is timeless and yet timely for it still speaks about and to us today. Perhaps it will speak to your heart as well as it did mine so many years ago.

THE HARNESS OF THE LORD

There is a terrific operation of the Spirit going on today to bring the Sons of God into an absolute confinement to the perfect will of God. This is the Day of His Preparation, the day in which He is preparing the channel through which He shall pour forth His Glory for all the world to see. This channel is His Body in the earth, that glorious company of people who are being conformed through much tribulation and fiery tests to the Image of the Son of God. This is His "battle axe and weapons of war" with which He shall subdue kingdoms and overcome all His enemies. This is His "mighty and strong One" to whom He shall commit the work of judging this world. This is His Overcomer, His "great army" with which He shall bring the nations into submission. The weapons of their warfare are not carnal, natural weapons, but they are mighty weapons, mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds. These are those who shall "be strong and do exploits."

But before God can commit this great and tremendous ministry into their hands, they must submit themselves to the discipline of the Lord, letting Him truly be the Lord of their entire lives. We have long since dealt with the question of open sin, but now God is dealing with the inward rebellion of our own wills. Some good Christians are not now being so dealt with, for they are not in this Firstfruits Company, but nevertheless there is a real dealing of God going on within those who are called into the High Calling of God. This is a very real thing, and is the work of the Refiner's Fire. To those who are going through it, some of its aspects are horrible, but very necessary, and the end result thereof is glorious as we are brought into absolute and complete submission to the will of our Lord.

It was in a minister's conference and convention in Tulsa, Oklahoma that God gave me a vision which I want to share with you concerning this harnessing of our own wills. There were more than 30 ministers present in this particular Thursday morning service, and God, the Father of spirits, was present to deal with His sons, to correct them and discipline them to absolute obedience to His will. There was such a stern dealing in the Spirit that no one could go to the pulpit and minister, there was a reluctance among the ministers to say anything except that which was directly ordered by the Spirit. And as those men of God sat there in the awesome presence of Almighty God, some of them having many years of ministry, some missionaries, all of them capable of getting up and preaching a powerful sermon, I was impressed by the way they responded to the discipline of the Spirit. And in the midst of this terrific dealing of God with out spirits, the Holy Ghost gave me a vision…Bill Britton

I Saw the King's Carriage!

On a dirt road in the middle of a wide field stood a beautiful carriage, something on the order of a stagecoach, but all edged in god, and with beautiful carvings. It was pulled by six large chestnut horses, two in the lead, two in the middle and two in the rear. But they were not moving, they were not pulling the carriage, and I wondered why. Then I saw the driver underneath the carriage, on the ground on his back, just behind the last two horses' heels, working on something between the front wheels of the carriage. I though, "My, he is in a dangerous place; for if one of those horses kicked or stepped back, they could kill him, or if they decided to go forward, or got frightened somehow, they would pull the carriage right over him." But he didn't seem afraid, for he knew that those horses were disciplined and would not move till he told them to move. The horses were not stamping their feet nor acting restless, and though there were bells on their feet, the bells were not tinkling. There were pom-poms on their harness over their heads, but the pom-poms were not moving. They were simply standing still and quiet, waiting for the voice of the Master.

There were Two Young Colts in the Field

As I watched the harnessed horses, I noticed two young colts coming out of the open field, and they approached the carriage and seemed to say to the horses: "Come and play with us, we have many fine games, we will race with you, come catch us…" And with that the colts kicked up their heels, flicked their tails and raced across the open field. But when they looked back and saw the horses were not following, they were puzzled. They knew nothing of harnesses, and could not understand why the horses did not want to play. So they called to them: "Why do you not race with us? Are you tired? Are you too weak? Do you not have strength to run? You are much too solemn, you need more joy in life." But the horses answered not a word, nor did they stamp their feet or toss their heads. But they stood, quiet and still, waiting for the voice of the Master.

Again the colts called to them: "Why do you stand so in the hot sun? Come over here in the shade of this nice tree. See how green the grass is? You must be hungry, come and feed with us, it is so green and so good. You look thirsty, come drink of one of our many streams of cool clear water." But the horses answered them with not so much as a glance, but stood still, waiting for the command to go forward with the King.

Colts in the Master's Corral

And then the scene changed, and I saw lariat nooses fall around the necks of the two colts, and they were led off to the Master's corral for training and discipline. How sad they were as the lovely green fields disappeared, and they were put into the confinement of the Corral with its brown dirt and high fence. The colts ran from fence to fence, seeking freedom, but found that they were confined to this place of training. And then the Trainer began to work on them, with his Whip and His Bridle. What a death for those who had been all their lives accustomed to such a freedom! They could not understand the reason for this torture, this terrible discipline. What great crime had they done to deserve this? Little did they know of the responsibility that was to be theirs when they had submitted to the discipline, learned to perfectly obey the Master, and finished their training. All they knew was that this processing was the most horrible thing they had ever known.

Submission and Rebellion

One of the colts rebelled under the training, and said, "This is not for me. I like my freedom, my green hills, my flowing streams of fresh water. I will not take any more of this confinement, this terrible training." So he found a way out, jumped the fence and ran happily back to the meadows of grass. And I was astonished that the Master let him go, and went not after him. But He devoted His attention to the remaining colt. This colt, though he had the same opportunity to escape, decided to submit his own will, and learn the ways of the Master. And the training got harder than ever, but he was rapidly learning more and more how to obey the slightest wish of the Master, and to respond to even the quietness of His voice. And I saw that had there been no training, no testing, there would have been neither submission nor rebellion from either of the colts. For in the field they did not have the choice to rebel or submit, they were sinless in their innocence. But when brought to the place of testing and training and discipline, then was made manifest the obedience of one and the rebellion that lay hidden in the heart of the other. And though it seemed safer not to come to the place of discipline because of the risk of being found rebellious, yet I saw that without this there could be no sharing of His glory, no Sonship.

Into the Harness

Finally this period of training was over. Was he now rewarded with his freedom, and sent back to the fields? Oh no. But a greater confinement than ever now took place, as a harness dropped about his shoulders. Now he found there was not even the freedom to run about the small corral, for in the harness he could only move where and when his Master spoke. And unless the Master spoke, he stood still.

The scene changed, and I saw the other colt standing on the side of a hill, nibbling at some grass. Then across the fields, down the road came the King's carriage, drawn by six horses. With amazement he saw that in the lead, on the right side, was his brother colt, now made strong and mature on the good corn in the Master's stable. He saw the lovely pom-poms shaking in the wind, noticed the glittering gold bordered harness about his brother, heard the beautiful tinkling of the bells on his feet… and envy came into his heart. Thus he complained to himself: "Why has my brother been so honored, and I am neglected? They have not put bells on my feet, nor pom-poms on my head. The Master has not given me the wonderful responsibility of pulling His carriage, nor put about me the golden harness. Why have they chosen my brother instead of me?" And by the Spirit the answer came back to me as I watched. "Because one submitted to the will and discipline of the Master, and one rebelled, thus has one been chosen and the other set aside."

A Famine in the Land

Then I saw a great drought sweep across the countryside, and the green grass became dead, dry, brown and brittle. The little streams of water dried up, stopped flowing, and there was only a small muddy puddle here and there. I saw the little colt (I was amazed that it never seemed to grow or mature) as he ran here and there, across the fields looking for fresh streams and green pastures, finding none. Still he ran, seemingly in circles, always looking for something to feed his famished spirit. But there was a famine in the land, and the rich green pastures and flowing streams of yesterday were not to be had. And one day the colt stood on the hillside on weak and wobbly legs, wondering where to go next to find food, and how to get strength to go. Seemed like there was no use, for good food and flowing streams were a thing of the past, and all the efforts to find more only taxed his waning strength. Suddenly he saw the King's carriage coming down the road, pulled by six great horses. And he saw his brother, fat and strong, muscles rippling, sleek and beautiful with much grooming. His heart was amazed and perplexed, and he cried out: "My brother, where do you find the food to keep you strong and fat in these days of famine? I have run everywhere in my freedom, searching for food, and I find none. Where do you, in your awful confinement, find food in this time of drought? Tell me, please, for I must know!" And then the answer came back from a voice filled with victory and praise: "In my Master's House, there is a secret place in the confining limitations of His stables where He feeds me by His own hand, and His granaries never run empty, and His well never runs dry." And with this the Lord made me to know that in the day when people are weak and famished in their spirits in the time of spiritual famine, that those who have lost their own wills, and have come into the secret place of the most High, into the utter confinement of His perfect will, shall have plenty of the corn of Heaven, and a never ending flow of fresh streams of revelation by His Spirit. Thus the vision ended.

Interpretation of the Vision

"Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it." (Habakkuk 2:2) "Harness the horses: and get up, ye horsemen" (Jeremiah 46:4).

I'm sure that many of you who can hear what the Spirit saith to the Church, have already seen what God was showing in the vision. But let me make it plain. Being born into the Family of God, feeding in the green pastures and drinking of the many streams of the unfolding revelation of His purposes is fine and wonderful. But it is not enough. While we were children, young, undisciplined, limited only by the outer fence of the Law that ran around the limits of the pastures, (that kept us from getting into the dark pastures of poison weeds), He was content to watch us develop and grow into young manhood, spiritually speaking. But the time came to those who fed in His pastures, and drank at His streams, when they were to be brought into discipline or "child-training" for the purpose of making them mature Sons. Many of the children today cannot understand why some of those who have put on the harness of God cannot get excited by the many religious games and the playful antics of the immature. They wonder why the disciplined ones run not after every new revelation or feed on every opportunity to engage in seemingly "good and profitable" religious activities. They wonder why some will not race with them in their frantic efforts to build great works and great and notable ministries. They cannot understand the simple fact that this Company of saints is waiting for the voice of the Master, and they do not hear God in all this outward activity. They will move in their time, when the Master speaks. But not before, though many temptations come from the playful colts. And the colts cannot understand why those who seemingly appear to have great abilities and strength are not putting it to good use. "Get the carriage on the road", they say, but the disciplined ones, those in God's harness, know better than to move before they hear the voice of the Master. They will move in their time, with great purpose, and great responsibility.

And the Lord made me to know that there were many whom He had brought into training who had rebelled against the discipline, the chastising of the Father. And they could not be trusted with the great responsibility of mature Sonship, so he let them go back to their freedom, back to their religious activities and revelations and gifts. They are still His people, still feeding in His pastures, but He has set them aside from the great purposes for the end of the age. So they revel in their freedom, feeling that they are the Chosen ones with the many streams of living water, not knowing that they have been set aside as unfit for His great work in this end of the Age.

And He showed me that though the chastising seemeth grievous for the time, and the discipline hard to endure, yet the result with all the glory of Sonship is worth it all, and the glory to follow far exceeds the suffering we endure. And though some lose even their lives in this training, yet they will share alike in the glory of His eternal purposes. So faint not, saints of God, for it is the Lord that doth bring thee into confinement, and not thine enemy. It is for thy good, and for His glory, so endure all things with praises and thanksgiving that He hath counted thee worthy to share His glory! Fear thou not the whip in His hand, for it is not to punish thee, but to correct and train thee, that thou mightest come into submission to His will, and be found in His likeness in that Hour. Rejoice thou in thy trials, in all thy tribulations, and glory thou in His cross, and in the confining limitations of His harness, for He hath chosen thee, and He hath taken upon Himself the responsibility of keeping thee strong and well fed, so lean thou upon Him, and trust not in thin own ability and thine own understanding. So shalt thou be fed, and His hand shall be upon thee, and His glory shall overshadow thee and shall flow through thee as it goes forth to cover the earth. Glory to God! Bless the Lord, He's wonderful! Let Him be Lord of your life, friends, and complain not at that which He bringeth to pass in your life.

Plenty in the Time of Famine

For in the hour when famine sweeps the land, He shall feed by His own hand those who are submitted to His perfect will, and who dwell in the secret place of the Most High. When terror stalks the land, those in His harness hall not be afraid, for they shall feel His bit and bridle and know the guidance of His Spirit. When others are weak and frail and fearful, there shall be those who shall be strong in the power of His might, and shall lack for no good thing. In the hour when the traditions of the religious systems have proven false, and their streams have dried up, then His Chosen ones shall speak forth with the true Word of the Lord. So rejoice, Sons of God, that you have been chosen by His grace for this great work in this last hour.

The fence which kept the colts in their own meadows and their own pastures mean nothing to the team in the harness, for the gates open to them, and they go forth pulling the king's carriage into many strange and wonderful places. They do not stop to eat the poison weeds of sin, for they feed only in the Master's stable. These fields they trample under their feet as they go forth on the King's business. And so to those who are brought into absolute subjection to His will, there is no Law. For they move in the Grace of God, led only by His Spirit where all things are lawful but not all things are expedient. This is a dangerous realm for the undisciplined, and many have perished in sin as they leaped over the fence without His harness and His bridle. Some have though of themselves as being completely harnessed and submissive to Him, only to find that in some avenue of their life there dwelled rebellion and self-will. Let us wait before Him until He puts His noose around us and draws us to His place of training. And let us learn of the dealings of God and the movings of His Spirit until at last we feel His harness drop about us, and hear His voice guiding us. Then there is safety from the traps and pitfalls of sin, and then shall we abide in His house forever!

FLUNKED THE FINAL - By Jay Ferris

This is very powerful. There is no wealth that can compare with being loved and knowing it.  That is faith’s response to the gospel.  (A phrase from the well known song, “Summertime,” comes to mind:
“…Your Daddy’s rich and your Ma is good lookin, so hush little baby, don’t you cry…”
God’s love is not reactive like the kind of love that is only good for friends.  God’s love is redemptive.  It has the power to change the lives of those who believe it.  (Romans 1:16)
Another thing about God’s kind of love is that it is not quantifiable for tax purposes.  Those who are loved are tax exempt in the most important sense of exemption.
In any case, once I saw this, it was very easy to see that both the kingdom and the economy of God had come to earth at Pentecost.  Remember the question of Jesus students/disciples:
"Lord wilt thou restore at theis time the kingdom to Isarel?"
Restore at this time the economy of Israel?  The financial sovereignty of Israel?  Not in the way they were thinking, and, for the most part, not in the way we have been thinking for two thousand years now with our carnally minded, earth bound point of view.  God had something better in mind. Much better!  But it was only available after the Holy Spirit came upon them.
Information/teaching/(doctrine) is not enough, not even when you get it from the Word of God.  Understanding only comes with, and in the Spirit of God. If we grieve the Spirit, we are bound not to get it!
Around the turn of the century, I had been wrestling with “what came first: the Spirit/chemistry or the body language?” or rather, “the Spirit or the community?”  That brought me to the circumstances that positioned the early Church for Pentecost.
Perhaps Jesus hung around for forty days because He knew they would never make it in the upper room for fifty days.  (The wonder is that they made it for ten.)
It’s not nearly so important what we know as it is who Jesus knows: “Get away from me, I never knew you,” Matthew 7:23.  “Now that you know God or rather are known by God…” Galatians 4:9.  That may have been the last time that the Church ever got into one place in one accord.  The thing that keeps us from being in one accord is all the stuff we think we know, and even the stuff we actually know.

What is needed is the gift of stupid.  We need to become as little children.  The problem is that we have been trying to substitute knowledge for the power of the Holy Spirit – (Daniel 12:4) information for affirmation.
In the beginning, they didn’t know anything but Jesus.  They came together and wound up in one accord.  The Chemistry of God fell on them all.  Then they began to get to know things.  They especially began to get to know Jesus.  Sad to say, it wasn’t long before the chemistry got smothered.  It is the same today. Very soon they knew too much to come together again, let alone in one accord, Acts 20:29, 30.
In short, we really do need to know “…nothing, but Jesus Christ, and Him crucified,” 1 Corinthians 2:2.  That looks to me like the only way that we are ever going to return to the upper room.  Knowledge not only “puffs up,” 1 Corinthians 8:1. it blows us right out of the Kingdom of God, the Church. “Systematic theology” is an oxymoron.  God is not a system!

It is a matter of doctrine versus life. We could wish it were only “as distinct from life,” but, sad to say, it really is “versus life.”  This doesn’t have to be true if our doctrine is Christ, but more often than not, such claims only turn out to be more lectures and letters; and, oh yes, even books.
After three and a half years of being taught the doctrine of Christ, by quite arguably history’s greatest Teacher, they still didn’t understand.  Not only that, but after the resurrection there were forty more days of post resurrection teaching focused on the Kingdom of God, taught, not just by history’s Greatest Teacher, but by then, resurrected.  (That’s got to be more riveting than a Ph.D., at least, where undivided attention is concerned.)
They flunked the final, Acts 1:1-7.  Or, was it only the mid-term?
A Post Script from me (George Dunn)

Amen Jay.  Indeed knowledge puffs up (makes proud)..puffed up like proud peacock showing off for the opposite sex.  I often think of this Proverbs 16:   “Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD..." and "God is opposed to the proud but gives lavish favor (grace)  to the hunble."
Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is way that seems RIGHT unto a man but the end thereof are the ways of death.”
Knowledge is not nor does it lead to power - not in the economy of God.  "Knowledge is Power" is the Big Lie of Western civilization. Knowledge leads to pride which is the sin of altitude originating with Lucifer himself:  "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!   For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. "
This is an apt description of Pride from God’s perspective… I WILL ascend!  Being high and mighty might enable one to be above and to assume authority or control over others, but that is not the God's meaning of the power in the Holy Spirit! It is the spirit of control - an unholy spirit!  knowledge makes lofty, heady - proud!  But God,  gives grace to the humble! In Western culture we have substituted knowledge ABOUT (heady stuff) for knowledge OF (hearty stuff).
The Hebrew word for knowledge is דעת (da’at), a noun derived from the verb ידע (yada) meaning “to know.” The idea of “knowing” in Ancient Hebrew thought is similar to our understanding of knowing but is more personal and intimate. We may say that we “know” someone but simply mean we “know” of his or her existence but, in Hebrew thought one can only “know” someone if they have a personal and intimate relationship. In Genesis 18:19 God says about Abraham “I know him” meaning he has a very close relationship with Abraham. In Genesis 4:1 it says that Adam “knew Eve his wife” implying a very intimate sexual relationship. In a Western sense knowledge of may mean an understanding of human anatomy but in a biblical sense it implies a deep intimacy relationship!
Knowledge (Gnosis in Greek) also has the same implication  Gnosticism, (from gnosis) is a philosophical and religious movement which started in pre-Christian times. It may have had is source in the Jewish community of Alexandria and been later picked up by some Christian groups in Judea and the Galilee.
The name is derived from the Greek word “gnosis” which literally means “knowledge.” However, the English words “Insight” and “enlightenment” capture more of the meaning of “gnosis.” It is pronounced with a silent “G” (NO-sis). Gnosticism is not factual, intellectual, rational knowledge, such as is involved in mathematics and physics science or even theology, that would have been more accurately represented by the Greek word “episteme.” Rather, Gnosis involves the relational or experiential knowledge of God and of the divine or spiritual nature within us. We're not talking RATIONAL but RELATIONAL knowing!
Intimate , experiential  knowledge of the Holy can only produce humility – a bowing down of the heart - not a lifting up or pride so that like Lucifer we  discover that pride is the sin of altitude!  Instead of bowing down low before Him we find ourselves lifted up like some  hot air balloon.

Been there!  done that!

Are You Listening?!

"I've written to warn you about those who are trying to deceive you. But they're no match for what is embedded deeply within you—Christ's anointing, no less! You don't need any of their so-called teaching. Christ's anointing teaches you the truth on everything you need to know about yourself and him, uncontaminated by a single lie. Live deeply in what you were taught."
I John 2:26-27 The Message
In this day of Christian celebrities and international multi-media, it is much easier to watch, listen and believe what we see and hear in the flesh rather than to quietly listen to the voice within.
Just this weekend I read about another Christian celebrity, with a worldwide following, who has fallen from his pedestal. I'm sure many of his followers are disappointed, hurt, confused and/or feeling betrayed.
Who really betrayed them? Or did they betray themselves?!
The Lord is no respecter of persons... He does not place us on a pedestal for listening to His voice and hearing the Truth. We need to be careful not to do the same thing because when "the blind lead the blind they both fall into the pit". These celebrities have nothing we don't have if we are truly in Christ. We don't need a "new" anointing to fall on us.... our anointing abides in us... the Christ who is the Truth. He can/will lead us into all Truth if we listen! We need to learn to weigh those other voices, no matter how famous they are or how good they "sound' against His voice within us. He alone IS the Truth and all we ultimately need!
Matthew 24 says there will be many deceivers in the last days and they will be so convincing that "even the elect might be deceived, were it possible". Is it possible that these deceivers may even be deceiving themselves?! Could they be believing that they truly speak FOR God what is in His heart, rather than speaking from what is in their own hearts in response to their own needs/wants?
It is hard for us to truly discern our own motives and often we find ourselves following our desires rather than Christ. Often I believe God speaks a truth to us that He wants shared, but that doesn't mean we are to build our own kingdom on it and take ownership of it for our purposes. As fleshly beings, that is impossible not to do without Him. And to do it with Him means we have to know and hear His voice within us. Only the Lord can discern the true motivations of a man's heart or its voice, so we better listen with His ears rather than our own or we will be following the man and not the Lord.
It is possible that many of these celebrities are distracting us with good teachings, without intent to hurt or harm, but built on a true revelation that is now being "fleshed out" in their own hearts/minds. When the focus changes from His thoughts to ours, we will eventually lead ourselves astray. If we are followed, our followers are as wrong as we are for not waiting and listening for His direction.
Satan also comes as an "angel of light" and loves to lead us astray even if only to distract us from REALLY listening. We need to remember that everything that looks or seems good is not necessarily from the Lord and should be taken as His will for that moment. Good things are good things, but we are not necessarily meant to do every good thing that comes along, even though we are to do good. God is always working for the good and God is good, but all that appears good is not necessarily from God for us to do or to listen to and follow. Satan can be just as effective distracting us as he can be in destroying us. Either way we are rendered ineffective in His Kingdom.
Faith without works is dead, but works without the Holy Spirits inspiration are just works. If we really listen, we might find that much of what we are hearing from these Christian celebrities, we already know, but are too lazy or distracted to put into practice by thinking for ourselves.
It scares me how caught up Western Christians are in following the men who dwell among us, who are still nothing more than men, rather than the Jesus who indwells us!
Yes, He can and does speak through others to us, but first and foremost, He wants to have a personal relationship, speaking TO us, from His place within us. Let us learn to become better listeners and test what we hear from without, against what we hear from within. Listening to voices who (supposedly) speak for Christ, is a poor substitute for hearing and obeying the voice of Christ within us.
I think we often feel/think that because these men have greater intellect, education, charisma, whatever, we NEED them and their teachings to discern His will for our lives. He may use men to instruct, motivate, convict, encourage, etc. but it is only beneficial to us to the degree that it is Him doing it through them. Let’s face it folks, He spoke through an ass to achieve his purpose. The key element was that it was Him doing the speaking. He loves and values the ignorant, penniless, uneducated, true believer, every bit as much as the educated, intellectual believer.
It is man that makes them celebrities not God.
He loves us JUST BECAUSE He loves us...not for who we are, but because of who He is. He speaks to you and I with the same voice and wisdom that He speaks to them..... the question is;
"Are we listening to Him?"
We don't need to listen to men to hear what He is saying to us, but we do need to listen to Him to know if what they are saying to us is Truth. We must know that He is speaking to us through them.

"I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd puts the sheep before himself, sacrifices himself if necessary. A hired man is not a real shepherd. The sheep mean nothing to him. He sees a wolf come and runs for it, leaving the sheep to be ravaged and scattered by the wolf. He's only in it for the money. The sheep don't matter to him."
"I am the Good Shepherd. I know my own sheep and my own sheep know me. In the same way, the Father knows me and I know the Father. I put the sheep before myself, sacrificing myself if necessary. You need to know that I have other sheep in addition to those in this pen. I need to gather and bring them, too. They'll also recognize my voice..."

"My sheep recognize my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them real and eternal life. They are protected from the Destroyer for good. No one can steal them from out of my hand. The Father who put them under my care is so much greater than the Destroyer and Thief. No one could ever get them away from him. I and the Father are one heart and mind."
